Community Solstice Spiral

Walking the Spiral is one of the simplest and yet most reverent and meaningful moments of the year. In this season that can often be chaotic, cold, and overwhelming, we invite you to gift yourself a meditative moment that cultivates your inner light. The Spiral is open from 5:30 to 7:00. You may arrive any time within that window, and expect to stay for at least 15-20 minutes. Individuals and families are welcome. Please note that this is a quiet event, with minimal speaking.

Please enter through the South doors (Costco side).

The students will walk the spiral the following day with their class.

Thursday, December 20
1:30 - 2:15 pm
Festival of Lights

Families are invited to attend this all school assembly. Come enjoy a puppet play and community sing-along to start your winter vacation off right!  If you arrive a little early, drop into the Community Room for a cup of bone broth.

From 2:20 – 2:40 pm we will have an open dismissal for parents/guardians to bid faculty and staff a happy holiday and clean out cubbies before the break.  Children may bypass the car line and leave with parents/guardians.

Important Note: There will be no aftercare.  All children must be collected during normal dismissal (2:25 – 2:40 pm).

NO SCHOOL

There is no school on Friday, December 21. We will see you on Monday, January 7!

Monday, January 21
TBD
MLK Day of Service

Each year, on the third Monday in January, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service is observed as a “day on, not a day off.” MLK Day of Service is intended to empower individuals, strengthen communities, bridge barriers, create solutions to social problems, and move us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community.” (from the Organization for National and Community Service website)

This year, we are encouraging the UPWS community to participate in the MLK Day of Service in a coordinated way.  In the upcoming weeks, more information will be provided about your class’ volunteer opportunity.

Each class will also be celebrating Dr. King in their own class-appropriate way the week before.

Volunteer Opportunities Over Break - Let's Clean the Kitchen and Finish the Practical Arts Room!

As you may remember, Urban Prairie received a generous grant to get our kitchen up and running. This will help cover the costs of the expensive equipment required. However, step one will involve some good old elbow grease from our dedicated community. Please join Janine and kitchen team over break to clean our kitchen space.

Our Practical Arts room is finally painted.  Now we need to make the final push to complete the room so our students can get to work in January.

Volunteer Days: December 26 & January 4
Time: Late morning/Mid-Day (exact times TBD)

Please contact Janine Farzin if you are available to help at jwaliszewski@gmail.com.

New Lunch Service!

Urban Prairie will be using a new lunch service starting when we return in January. The company is Gourmet Gorilla, you can learn more about the company at www.gourmetgorilla.com.

We will be serving hot, family style lunches. The price per meal will be $4.50 per meal. All dietary restrictions can be accommodated.

We need parent volunteers to help set up the hot lunches and serve, please contact Sophie Huckabay (sophie.huckabay@urbanprairie.org) if you can help!

Ordering may not be available before we depart for break, so please watch your emails for the signup link and instructions.

Bumper Magnets are here!

If you ordered one, we will give it to you or your child at pick-up.  If you forgot to order but still want one, you can buy one in the office for $10.

Need last minute gifts? We've got you covered!

We have a few handmade items left over from the Community Fair. All items were made by UPWS faculty, staff, and parents. All proceeds go directly to the school!

Curious Questions   (1)
What is a "push-in" festival?

You know we love a good festival!  Throw in a pie, and you’ve got a real UPWS event!  But did you know that we have many different kinds of festivals?  There are “community festivals” like Festival of Courage where we mark important times of year by celebrating with our whole wider community.  There are “all school assemblies” like the Opening Ceremony and Festival of Thanks.  These events are held during the school day and are open to the families in our school.  We usually only have a few such assemblies a year.  There are also “in-school assemblies.”  These can be sharing events where each class shows something that they are working on in school or smaller events like our weekly Monday morning gatherings in the playlot.  These smaller assemblies help to weave the social fabric of our school and let the students see others’ works in progress.  We also have “push-in festivals” where a festival or holiday is celebrated within each classroom in a way that  meets the class developmentally.  This allows for a more varied learning experience for our students.  In the past, we have celebrated Transgender Day of Visibility in this way–for example, the 4th grade discussed preferred pronouns in the context of their language arts studies, while the 1st graders heard a fairy tale with a gender-fluid protagonist.  This year, MLK Day will be a push-in festival where students are engaged in varying activities in the lead-up to the National Day of Service.

In Gratitude   (1)
Thank you to our parent and guardian community who make every day special

Here at Urban Prairie, our parent and guardian community has always been an essential pillar of the school; bringing their children to experience this education, devoting volunteer time, donating funds, and making the faculty feel loved and cared for. Thank you for a beautiful and fruitful 2018, here is to many years to come!
