Each year, on the third Monday in January, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service is observed as a “day on, not a day off.” MLK Day of Service is intended to empower individuals, strengthen communities, bridge barriers, create solutions to social problems, and move us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community.” (from the Organization for National and Community Service website)
This year, we are encouraging the UPWS community to participate in the MLK Day of Service in one of two volunteer options: La Casa Norte and the Urban Prairie Kitchen.
La Casa Norte is a great organization that works with young people and families who are facing homelessness. For several years, we have given the collection from our warm things drive to La Casa Norte, and we are happy to increase our connection with them. Unfortunately, they can only accommodate 20 volunteers (and volunteering children count towards that total) for the morning of sandwich-making and other duties, so sign up quickly!
Our own great kitchen project is another option for service on Monday! The Urban Prairie Kitchen envisions not only serving our own students and families, but reaching outside our doors into our new neighborhood. That dream begins with cleaning! We have to prepare the space for repair and equipment installation, and as you know, many hands make light work!
Please sign up here for either opportunity, and I look forward to seeing you soon for our “day on”!
