MLK Day of Service (NO SCHOOL)

Each year, on the third Monday in January, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service is observed as a “day on, not a day off.” MLK Day of Service is intended to empower individuals, strengthen communities, bridge barriers, create solutions to social problems, and move us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community.” (from the Organization for National and Community Service website)

This year, we are encouraging the UPWS community to participate in the MLK Day of Service in a coordinated way.  Expect to see an email from Heather Berhalter tomorrow with details.

Each class will also be celebrating Dr. King in their own class-appropriate way the week before.

New Lunch Service, Order Now!

Urban Prairie is using a new lunch service. The company is Gourmet Gorilla, you can learn more about the company at www.gourmetgorilla.com.

We are serving hot, family style lunches priced at $4.50 per meal. Other cold lunch and “ala carte” options are available for various prices. Meals are prepared in a nut-free kitchen and all dietary restrictions can be accommodated.

The order deadline for the following week is always Wednesday at midnight.

For detailed instructions on placing orders click here.

We need parent volunteers to help set up the hot lunches and serve, please contact Sophie Huckabay (sophie.huckabay@urbanprairie.org) if you can help!

Bumper Magnets are here!

If you ordered one, we will give it to you or your child at pick-up.  If you forgot to order but still want one, you can buy one in the office for $10.

Curious Questions   (1)
How is the kitchen renovation being funded?

There has been an amazing outpouring of interest and generosity from outside donors for the kitchen project.  Inspired by our vision for preparing nutrient-dense food and serving the greater community, people from all across the country have donated to this project.  The Kitchen Team is also actively seeking grants, and as you may remember, we received a very large grant from the Shared Gifting Circle in October.

We are currently exploring the permitting and registration process.  The Kitchen will be its own LLC, and as such will cover its own costs–both for renovation and operation.

Interested in learning more?  Contact Janine Farzin (Kitchen Team Chair and gr 3 and gr 1 parent).
