Welcome Jenifer Brenner, Admissions and Enrollment Coordinator!

Please welcome Jenifer Brenner as our Admissions and Enrollment Coordinator. Jenifer brings a wealth of customer service, project management, and marketing communications expertise to Urban Prairie.

Originally from Chicago, Jenifer has a Master of Marketing Communication from Roosevelt University. She has had an extensive working life in both the commercial and private sectors, both in the U.S. and abroad, with almost 20 years in the UK where the Waldorf/Steiner education is so familiar. She oversaw production of the IKEA UK catalog, ran her own hand printed textile business, was a cofounder of a cooperative arts gallery, and managed promotional strategies for the nonprofit Age UK.   Jenifer’s passion is sacred geometry and Frank Lloyd Wright, having built her own home from a 150 year old barn in Snowdonia National Park in Wales, UK, using all sustainable materials and building practices. Jenifer loves all outdoor activities, but she mainly tries to escape into the hills to hike at every chance! She has a 6th grader at Urban Prairie, and a gorgeous Springer Spaniel, the perfect companions for exploring. She also enjoys textile screen printing and yoga, and is thrilled to enter into this new chapter, advocating and bringing the Urban Prairie’s Waldorf education that she is so passionate about to new families and the community.

Jenifer is a part-time contract employee with office hours on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings through December, ramping up to Monday through Friday mornings during enrollment season, January to March, and then continuing through the school year with the current schedule. Festival of Thanks - Please Read!

We will celebrate the Festival of Thanks on Friday, November 22. For those of you who were here last year, some of the things we do will be familiar but there are also some significant changes! Please read carefully to know what we need from all of our Urban Prairie families!

Wednesday, November 20: Bring your assigned food item! 

Family Food Assignments

Each family with students in grades 1-8 is asked to bring something for our shared meal. Instead of assigning by grade we are assigning by family. 

Additional Items and Help Needed!

  • Plug-in hot plates for soup cooking 
  • Large stock pots
  • Large folding tables
  • Helping hands! We need helpers on Thursday, 11/21, to help cook soup in classrooms and on Friday, 11/22, to help prepare and serve the meal

There will be an assembly in the afternoon of 11/22. While this assembly is not open to the whole community those helping with the meal are welcome to stay. The fourth grade will be performing the story of Stone Soup!

Note for EC families: While the shared meal in Cricket Hall is too overwhelming for our littlest ones, the EC will be helping us cook soup on Thursday. We welcome EC parents and guardians to come help on Thursday or Friday but do not require you to bring something for the meal.

Take Valentine (the Guinea Pig) home over Thanksgiving!

Our dear guinea pig, Valentine, needs a home over the Thanksgiving break. We will provide all the supplies needed. He is a loving little fur ball.

He can either be brought home Friday after school (11/22) or during conferences on Monday or Tuesday.

Sign Up for Parent/Guardian-Teacher Conferences!

Every fall and spring we hold conferences for parents and guardians to meet with their children’s teachers. These conferences are an essential touchpoint and building block in each child’s educational journey. Teachers prepare extensively for these conferences, and significant time and effort is spent scheduling and planning for these days. Families are asked to make every effort to schedule conference times during the times provided by their class teacher. If for some reason it is not possible to meet during the times provided, parents/guardians may reach out to their class teacher to see if an alternative time is possible. Note that it is not always possible for teachers to make these accommodations.

All parents/guardians are welcome to schedule time with special subject teachers. If there is a specific reason a special subject teacher wants to meet, they will reach out to parents/guardians directly.

Did we ever crack the vault?

Some of you may have been aware that a vault where we were keeping dishes and kitchen supplies got locked over the summer. The good news is, we cut a new door in the wall and now have access to our stuff! The bad news is, our stuff is coated in a think layer of cement dust.

Help us get our dishes clean by Festival of Thanks! Email Sophie Baumgartner (sophie.baumgartner@urbanprairie.org) if you can pitch in.

What's new with the REAL Kitchen?

Every day another piece of the kitchen falls into place.

If you are interested in volunteering in the kitchen once we’re up and running, get your Food Handler’s Certificate now so that you are ready to go!  Here’s one option among many in-person and online classes for this short course and exam. (Any IL Food Handler’s Certification Course is valid if it provides an ANSI-accredited certificate.)  If you have any kitchen-related questions, reach out to Janine Farzin.

Kitchen Education Event: Wednesday, November 20, 7:00 pm
Interested in learning more about the health and nutrition principles fueling our kitchen initiative? There will be education events throughout the year. The next one will be November 20th at 7:00pm!

All books are welcome! Those that don’t go to the library will be sold at the Community Fair on November 16, so please bring any books for adults before then.
