Kitchen Education Event

This event is the first of a series of educational events to orient and inform our community to our kitchen’s mission and purpose.

We’ll kick off this series with an opportunity to learn about the supporting principles and intention behind our kitchen. We’ll cover Biology 101 (proteins, fats, and carbohydrates), nutrient-density, and historical background on modern dietary recommendations. See you there!

If you have questions please contact Janine Farzin (2nd and 4th grade parent) at jwaliszewski@gmail.com.

Mark your calendars for future events:

Thursday, January 30, 3pm
Tuesday, March 10, 7pm
Monday, May 4, 7pm

Festival of Thanks

We will celebrate the Festival of Thanks on Friday, November 22. For those of you who were here last year, some of the things we do will be familiar but there are also some significant changes! Please read carefully to know what we need from all of our Urban Prairie families!

Thursday, November 21: Bring your assigned food item!

Family Food Assignments

Each family with students in grades 1-8 is asked to bring something for our shared meal. Instead of assigning by grade we are assigning by family.

Additional Items and Help Needed!

  • Plug-in hot plates for soup cooking
  • Large stock pots
  • Crock pots
  • Helping hands!
    • Thursday, 11/21, to help cook soup in classrooms, stick around after drop-off to help with this project
    • Friday, 11/22, we will be busy setting up, and serving food all day! The most critical time we need help is from 1:00 – 2:00 pm to flip Cricket Hall from a meal room to assembly space.

If you have items we can borrow or helping hands to lend, email sophie.baumgartner@urbanprairie.org.

Assembly at 2:00 pm
Community members are welcome to attend the assembly. The fourth grade will be performing the story of Stone Soup!

Note for EC families: While the shared meal in Cricket Hall is too overwhelming for our littlest ones, the EC will be helping us cook soup on Thursday. We welcome EC parents and guardians to come help on Thursday or Friday but do not require you to bring something for the meal.

Monday, November 25 - Tuesday, November 26
NO SCHOOL: Parent/Guardian-Teacher Conferences

The conferences sign-up are now closed. If you need to make any changes to your schedule please reach out to teachers directly. If you have any changes to childcare needs please email admin@urbanprairie.org.

Please consider sticking around before and/or after your conference to help clean out the old “kitchen” space! Childcare is available and we need all your helping hands. Email Ms. Baumgartner at sophie.baumgartner@urbanprairie.org if you can help!

Chicago Waldorf High School Information Session

Waldorf education is a journey that starts in the early childhood and ends the senior year of high school. Representatives and student ambassadors will be here at Urban Prairie to provide information about their programming, curriculum, and the Waldorf High School Experience. This is an opportunity to check out one of the great high schools that our city has to offer. Whether you are in the middle of high school decision-making or just starting your Waldorf journey, this will be an event to help guide your next steps.
All are welcome to this event, let us know you are coming by clicking here.

UPWS Nosh & Network - Parent Hosts Needed!

Do you have friends, neighbors, and colleagues looking for schools for their children? Have they expressed an interest in Waldorf education? Do you live in a prime location full of prospective families? Help us get the word out about this transformative education, and please consider hosting a UPWS Nosh & Network event in the new year at your place of work, church, residential building, or even your local pub! We are here to help you help us with materials, training, and general support. Get in touch with Admissions Coordinator Jenifer Brenner for further information.

Curious Questions   (1)
Is Urban Prairie growing new roots?

Why yes! In January a new room will open for two and three-year-olds in the space that was the mother’s room. This exciting venture will be our “Prairie Roots” room.
