Dear Parents,

With the end of the year comes many events and meetings. Please update your calendars for the busy weeks ahead!

And a very important announcement… The second grade has been asked to perform the maypole dance at this year’s May Faire on May 13 at 11:00! It is unusual for a second grade to hold his honor, and I’m thrilled for the class to be able to have this opportunity. The sixth grade will be playing music for us. While I expect all the children to attend these large festivals, I know it isn’t always possible for every family. However, since maypole dancing is relies on partners, I need to know as soon as possible if your child will not be attending.

CLASSROOM HIGHLIGHTS – Parts of Speech and Reading

This week we learned that the wizard doesn’t just have instant words, but he also categorizes words as naming words, doing words, and describing words. You can see that this will lead us to proper parts of speech. Right now we are in the introductory phases. This is one of those things that is very obvious to us as adults, but takes a little work as a child to understand. We spent some time this week playing games like charades (doing words) to help differentiate the parts of speech.

readingWe had our first Reading Workshop class yesterday. Thank you to the volunteers who came in to help! This is different from regular reading class where we’re all working from the same text. In Reading Workshop, each child is reading from their own “just right” book. Some brought books in, others selected (with help) books from my options, and a few just worked on their wizard instant words. Over the last few weeks, many students are beginning to shoot ahead in their reading abilities. The work they have put in is starting to pay off!

knitting outsideDue to picture day scheduling, Hannah Dallman and I had to alter one of our Handwork classes. We decided to host class in the park, to adorable results. Such a picturesque Waldorf moment, 8-year-olds knitting gnomes under the blooming crabapple trees.

Best,

Hannah
