Dear Third Grade,

Our last week of “real” school ended with our fun Neighborhood Crawl, complete with Italian ice! (And you can see below Ethan’s Italian-flag colored Italian ice selection!) It was a nice way to close the year and also to visit some of the east Little Italy parks that we will, in all likelihood, not visit again from our new campus. We also got to do some fun window shopping, stopping at a house construction site, looking in the butcher’s shop at the fig tree and the animal carcass, and them joking about all getting tattoos when we passed by the tattoo artist.

IN THE CLASSROOM

We spent the week reviewing the entire year backwards, which was quite a feat. It was interesting to see which parts stuck the most with which students, and who was able to remember which details. It turned out that the Shelters Block, with the research, writing, and model building, was a class favorite. And remember that I wasn’t even sure I was going to do it!

Our review also included a giant work packet that included all the major concepts of the year. The students were excited about these packets, and almost everyone completed them within the same day. I’ll be using these packets as a way of confirming for me where they are in their progress with their work.

This coming closing week will be spent finishing book work and projects, packing up and cleaning the classroom, hearing final stories, and hosting our farewell party for Gabriel and Finnegan.

I have been very pleased and impressed with the class as a whole. They have reached the next level of their scholarship and are truly rising fourth graders. I think this happens every year, but I am feeling very bittersweet with this graduation. It has been my favorite year so far. The highlights have been numerous, and the level of interest high. I can’t wait to see what they do next! I hope to see as many of you as possible on Wednesday for our Lexington Goodbye Party and Potluck. But if not, maybe we can plan a class get together over summer.
