Dear Parents,

Summer Fest was lovely this year, despite the heat. Great fun! Thanks to everyone who brought a dish or helped out.

Please note that a flu is passing through the first grade. I recommend you plan on few activities, early bedtimes, and lots of hand washing for the upcoming week.

It was an interesting week, with the feeling of summer living strongly in the students.  To meet this time of out-breath in the year, we painted almost every day in morning lesson. Though in Gr 1 we still are approaching painting through color and not form, this week we used images from a Russian fairy tale for our paintings. The story takes place in “the green time of year,” and involves an archer, a golden fire-bird, a horse of power, and the land of Never where the red sun rises above the deep blue sea. Lots of great images there!

During next week First Grade will have a few guests in the classroom, mostly adults but also a child. The children are used to visitors, and I know will bring their best hosting manners.

MUSIC CONCERT – Tues, June 14, 6:00pm

What: This end-of-year music concert is particularly special, as the students will premier the brand new choral and string quartet piece, “Hymns of the Urban Prairie.” Composer David Shenton will be in attendance. Grades 1-3 will open the concert with a song learned in chorus class, and Grades 4-6 will present “Hymns.”

Attire: Children should wear “Sunday best”

When: Grade 1 students should arrive back at school, dressed for the concert, between 5:30 and 5:45. The concert will begin at 6:00.

Aftercare: We strongly recommend that you pick-up your child instead of leaving them for aftercare on this day. However, if you plan on leaving your child in after care, please contact Ms Ingold (ashley.ingold@urbanprairie.org) as soon as possible. If your child normally stays for after care on Tuesdays, please also contact Ms Ingold to let us know whether you are picking them up as recommended or they are going to aftercare. Due to the nature of the event, we need an accurate head count.

OFFICE HOURS NOTE: I have the honor to be singing the premier with the middle grades choir. As they have a dress rehearsal that afternoon, I will not be able to host my regular Office Hours. Should you wish to meet, please let me know and we can work something out.

LAST DAY OF SCHOOL – Fri, June 17

The last day will be relaxed and fun. We plan on doing some mulching in Arrigo Park, so please have your child bring labeled gardening gloves if they have them. On Friday, school ends at 12:00 noon. There is no after care. Please keep in mind that children will have a lot of items to bring home.

PHOTOS!

If you missed the links for Essi and Heather’s fabulous photos of the class play, please enjoy them here and here. Thank you so much, Essi and Heather! I am so addicted to these, I’ve looked at them about 6 times now! They are officially distracting me from my work at this point.

There are also some nice pics of Jumpathon and new classroom shots.
