In the Classroom

This week we talked a bit more about metamorphic rocks, coal, crystal formation in quartz, and played mineralogy/geology Jeopardy.  Thursday we made busy cleaning the room for Diwali after the maintenance crew had graciously installed our permanent storage and lockers.

Next week we begin geography, taking a closer look at North and South America, along with some of the earth’s major biomes.

Math

This week in math the students took a quiz on the four operations in decimals and fractions.  We also put some information from a table into a pie chart.

Geometry

Grade 6 took a look at the sum of angles in quadrilaterals and came within a degree of accuracy with our new protractors.  Next week we will look at another way to show/prove the sum of angles in a quadrilateral.  Grade 5 did not have geometry this week due to Diwali.

Language Arts/Grammar

Grade 6 continued to work with punctuation in different ways: mainly how do dash, semi-colon, and parentheses flavor the experience of the reader.  We tried rearranging sentences using the different punctuation to see what best served each one depending on how we wanted it to come across.

Grade 5 practiced finding subject, predicate, and direct objects in simple sentences.

Diwali

Thank you so much to Hrishikesh Pawar for taking the time to help us participate in and observe Diwali.  Diwali is a festival of light, celebrated over several days each year in India; with one of the days falling on a moonless night, the cities are a beautiful sight with all of their festive lights and lamps.  The diyas, or traditional oil lamps became a tradition after Ayodhya welcomed back Ram from fourteen years of exile by lighting the streets with them.  It is a festival of the new year, and the Lakshmi Puja welcomes prosperity into our lives-not just prosperity of the material world, but also prosperity in the greater sense of family, positivity, and goodwill.  See pictures of our celebration here.

It was nice to see the students dressing their best.

Materials Needed Coming Up

This week the students need Secret of the Andes, our new novel, and books for researching and learning about their North or South American country.

Enjoy the week ahead.

Graciously,

Miss Kiefer
