Important Dates:

Wednesday, April 29th.  Parent Night…get a babysitter and come study with us!  We will move, create some artistic work, talk about child development/adolescence, and chat about anything else we might have time for.  Please see the email from the weekly update link for the pdf of our study material and try to read it before Wednesday.  We will not have time to read on Wednesday, only discuss.

Friday May 1st. Grandparent’s Day.  Please see admin emails for details.

Morning Lesson

Our mini Astronomy block has come to a close and we begin Physics this Monday.  Physics is the last scheduled block for the year and promises to be exciting.

It was inspiring to watch how interested, engaged, and present the students were on Friday’s trip to Volo Bog.  As part of our Earth Day celebrations Urban Prairie has instituted the tradition of visiting a special place in nature to foster a deeper appreciation for our earthly home.

Sky Observation Challenge

Keep it up even though it’s not homework anymore! It is my hope that the children will initiate periodic stargazing on clear nights even though our Astronomy block is over.

Daily Moon Observation

I would like the children to keep observing the moon until further notice.  We made spaces to note 28 day’s worth of observations in our observation charts.

Share the Reading Share the Fun!

I will be handing out reading logs tomorrow.  The instructions cite that students are required to read 20 minutes each day(required to log reading 5 days per week), with 10 being out loud to someone else and 10 listening to someone else read.  Please take a look at this sheet and the instructions with your child.

Reading out loud and listening to someone else should be enjoyable!  If your child reads something in a way that really helps you imagine a moment let them know that! (and try to read that way to them).  If they read a sentence or word you’re not sure they know the meaning of stop and ask them…you would be surprised how correctly they can add intonation to something that they actually couldn’t explain to you and would benefit discussing.  If you ask them if they know what something is and they reply, “Yes,” do not accept that as an answer-ask them to actually explain it to you.

Reading out loud is a wonderful social experience, can greatly enhance understanding, and is a skill that one quickly loses of left on the shelf.

Getting the Most out of Physics Reminder!

Physics is demonstration and experimentation based…I urge you to avoid all absences possible, as we will not redo any experiments.

Cheers until we see each other or until the next weekly update!
