Weekly Update 10/25/15

We will complete our math block this week with more place value practice and the story of the number 5. Last week I introduce counting by 6s which the second graders picked up extremely quickly. I remember last year that it took weeks for them to learn a new number to skip count. With their new ability to soak up numbers this way I will be teaching them how to count by sevens this week. We will also review the multiplication tables that we have learned thus far.

In preparation for Dia de los Muertos, the second graders will be sharing their picture and a couple of sentences about a person that has passed. They will also be making angelitos (angels) to put on the ofrenda. The celebration will take place on Tuesday, November 3rd.

On Friday children are welcome to wear their “school costume” for Halloween. We will have a show and tell of costumes at the end of the day. Did you know that we have show and tell each Friday? I allow 5 children to sign up per week and they are allowed to bring photographs, a book that is interesting to them, something they have made, or something from nature. Last week someone brought a glass dragon egg, to which another child replied “Well that proves it! Dragons are real!” Their minds are amazing. This week their is no show and tell because everyone is showing their costume.

In the social realm the children seem to be in a very good place. They are quite silly and occasionally hurt each others feelings, but for the most part they are practicing manners and working very hard. Fall is truly the best time for school. The class often plays together as a whole group at recess, creating a game that includes everyone. We are off to a great start!
