The first week of the play block went great! The 2nd graders are really up to the challenge. We are using this opportunity to practice writing some of the lines from the play. It has been a while since we have had a proper language arts block and I can already see some growth in their writing, memorization, and spelling. The play consists of 3 short saint stories. Each child has a part in one of the shorts and serves as a choral narrator in the others. They are having so much fun acting it out.
Skills classes are being used to practice math as I am now seeing a real need to work on the times tables consistently.
This week and next we have a guest teacher doing a painting lesson with the class on Wednesdays. Due to us being in a play block, they are not teaching morning lesson in 2nd grade.
Upcoming Events
Experience UP- Saturday, February 6. Come experience what it’s like to be an Urban Prairie student! If you have signed up for Astronomy, I will see you in class.
Second Grade Play- Friday, February 12 at 5:30pm. Children are expected to be dropped off in the 2nd grade room at 5:00pm. Parents may drop them off and wait downstairs to socialize until the play begins. More details about costumes, dinner, and such will come this week. We have tunics and you will not be required to buy anything.
All School Assembly- Friday, February 12 at 2:00pm. This is an opportunity for children to share work with one another. Parents are invited to attend but attendance is not required by any means. In light of the block we are in, the children will be sharing a short piece of their play which will be performed that evening.
No School for Midwinter Break– February 15-19.
Second Grade Camping Trip to Glastonbury in Indiana- Wednesday, May 11- Friday, May 13. Some details about this were shared at the Parent Evening. This will be a wonderful opportunity for the second grade and is a tradition in many Waldorf Schools. I look forward to sharing more information with you at the plans solidify.
