Morning Lesson
We have just entered the final block of the year, a Living on the Earth block that focuses on fibers.  Ms. Leidy and Ms. Dallman are joining us for this block and leading the third graders through processing wool this week.  Today they heard a story from Ms. Dallman about a boy and a girl on a farm that sheared their sheep, cleaned the wool, and completed the process all the way to knitting and weaving clothing.  Ask your third grader to tell you all the steps!  Throughout the block they will also be introduced to weight measurement and volume measurement.  The fibers block provides a great opportunity for the practical application of all types of measurement.

Language Arts
There are no Weekly Words this week.  Instead, the class will be practicing and reviewing upper case cursive letters.  Weekly Words will return next week.  In addition to all of the hands on work during the month of May, the class will practice writing through dictations and recording observations of their various fibers projects.

Garden
This week we are planting corn for the 3 sisters garden and Marigolds.  We will also discuss what we might like to plant as a gift for Ms. Avellone’s class.  As always, weeding and maintenance will occur.

Grandparent’s and Special Friend’s Day
As usual, this was a highlight of spring.  The class shared the song, “Morning Has Broken,” which many guests sang along to.  We showed them how to skip count by every number 1-12 while doing work on a ship!  The class shared challah with their guests as well as showed them their books, handwork, beeswax, and so forth.  We ended in the garden.  It was a lovely afternoon.
