Morning Lesson

Last week we began the Fibers block with Ms. Leidy and Ms. Dallman.  It is such a treat!  The class is doing a lot of hands on work.  Last week they heard stories about sheep and farmers, picked and washed wool, carded it, and spun it into yarn.  Keep sending those onion skins so that we can dye it in the near future!  In tandem with this, the class is doing book work that allows them to learn some more technical drawing skills as well as practicing observation and recording.  This week we will continue spinning wool using a drop spindle.  They will also learn about weight measurement and dry measure.  We will begin, of course, with the best tool for any measurement- ourselves!  Through first using hands to determine what is heavier and lighter, the children will have a personal understanding of weight.  This will bring a deeper relationship to weight once they learn how scales work and why they are important.

Math

The Times Table Challenges press on!  No one has completed all 12, yet.  Many of them are eager to get there.  We have left the math sheets behind for the year.  Spring is such a good time for hands on work and projects.  We continue to practice mental math throughout the week.  Math skills class is full of measurement practice and some practice problems to keep skills as fresh as they can be this time of year.

Building Project

The week of May 30th-June 2nd we will spend most of our time doing a modern building project.  This will have to be something that can be useful to the school AND make its way to the new building once Urban Prairie moves.  I have 2 ideas that I am researching.  I have a little bit of building know how, but would love some skilled volunteers to help!  I know that some of you are quite handy with woodworking and the class would certainly benefit from your guidance and company.  If you want to help for at least some of the time, please let me know.
