I hope that all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. It was great meeting with everyone for the parent/teacher conferences. Please don’t hesitate to follow up in the next few weeks with any additional questions or concerns!

These next two weeks, we will be covering the story of Moses and the Exodus of the Hebrew people from Egypt. It is a spectacular and epic story, one that the children will surely relish. We will be covering a number of things in terms of language arts. In our writing, we will be working with identifying the subject and object of sentences, working with parts of speech (particularly the adverb), and looking that the four types of sentences (questions, commands, statements, and exclamations). The commands will naturally fit in with the Ten Commandments. We are working with questions on two fronts, one is in learning to write letters and the other is in getting better at summarizing (What happened? When did it happen? Etc). Along with the four types of sentences is the requisite use of correct punctuation as well. These are skills that are being introduced and will be worked on throughout the course of the year.

Our spelling words are going to be changing for a few months as the children continue to solidify their sight words when reading and writing. The words they will get are based on their frequency of occurrence in written English. They will start off a bit easy for most of the class, but will quickly progress to a more appropriate level in a month or so. The number of words will be increasing to 10, but I think you will see that the time increase will be insignificant. I will also be adding on a puzzle each week, which you can work on with your child. They are for the sake of fun, discovery, and exploration. They are totally optional, but I hope that you will take the opportunity to tackle them with your child! Also, I put a reminder about  moon observations on the list. Again, this is simply to offer an opportunity to connect with your child’s school work. We talk about our moon and sun observations each morning.

There is quite a bit going on within the community! I will leave you to look at the calendar in the administrative update for details. But, the third grade will be responsible for an activity at the Yuletide Festival on Saturday, December 6. We will be running the Dreidel Table that evening.  We are asking that children and families lend a hand in 20 minute blocks. It is my hope that the third graders will be able to teach the game to the younger children at the festival. We will be learning to play and teach it throughout the week, so they should be well versed by Saturday evening. It will be a great opportunity for them to take the role of an older child in the community! Parents would be asked to simply make sure that things are running smoothly during their time slot. You can sign up here, and there can be more than one family at each time slot.
