Main Lesson

This past week has been an intense one for the gods and goddesses of norse mythology. Loki’s act of betrayal sent Balder to his death. Ragnarok, the foretold destruction of Yggdrasil and its nine worlds, has happened. Today they will hear the last story. From the water, a new world is expected to rise created by the children of goddesses and gods such as Odin and Thor who have all perished. The class was sad to bring our scenes of Norse Mythology to a close. I absolutely loved listening to their debate about why Odin died when he had so many “powers”. Finally, it was said that it was not in his control as it was foretold by the Norns.

The stories have been ripe with images for our work with grammar. Last week, we focused on prepositions and conjunctions (bridge words). There were a great deal of dictations, drawings, and independently written summaries.  The most exciting aspect of the week was the introduction of the class play: The Death of Balder!

Class Play

Today, we will officially begin our play block. Class time will include stories about life during the Viking time, however, morning lesson and homeroom will be dedicated to play rehearsal. The class is eager to create the props and costumes. This week, I plan to introduce story boards as a way for them to take part in stage blocking.

As we dedicate homeroom time to set design and props, the class will not be assigned spellwell over the next three weeks. That means there will be no spelling tests till after the play on Friday, March 31st. Students will be expected to practices play lines and music. Feel free to use the time to review passed spelling tests and lessons.
