Bold and Brawny, brave and bright,

Thor, the thunder god moved with might.

Heaving his hammer, he hurls it high!

His stormy sparks scar the sky.

Gentle and generous, joyful and just,
Balder the brave is fair and fine.
Delicate daisies ascend from dust
Where he has walked, for such is his sign.
Thor and Balder, Balder and Thor,
Brothers are they, though not the same.
One brings peace, the other, war.
And neither will stand for evil or shame.
Within my heart these two may live,
Each is valued, each can give
Important strengths that flow from my heart
Finding the balance, that is my part.

The Death of Balder- Class Play

This past week has been all about script breakdown and character development. Early in the week we broke the script down into 15 scenes listing the characters in the scene, props and primary action. The students were asked to chose one scene to create a storyboard. It was a really helpful way for them share how they pictured themselves (their character) moving on stage. We also practiced the walk and body language of three different characters. What’s the difference between a person who walks upright vs someone who walks with the air of arrogance. This was a lot of fun— and super helpful when we look are how our own body language sends a message.

Vikings

Through Olaf, the thrall, and his child master Erik, the class has been hearing a story about what life was like during the age of the Vikings. We went into great deal about the long ships and what it meant to go a-viking. Next week our norse mythology book will shift from scenes of norse mythology to images of long boats, maps and so on. It has been a wonderful way to bring our norse mythology to a close.

Pokemon Cards

Its become clear the guidelines laid down for the use of these cards at school have not been followed by the students. The class was told today that they may no longer bring the cards to school. I have cut tons of painting paper for the class to make their own cards in lieu of playing and “underground” trading. They actually never play the game. It appears to be more of a trading game– which has led to lying to classmates and teachers; even acts of stealing. This has carried over into aftercare and has caused a negative impact on interclass relationships. I’d rather the students spend time creating their own cards. Please note cards brought to school will be confiscated and not returned (no matter the value).
