SCHOOL NEWS

Rising Grade 2 Teacher Announcement

We are so pleased to welcome Liz Avila back to Urban Prairie Waldorf School as our rising grade 2 class teacher. Liz (she/her) is currently a mentor teacher, after being the class teacher for the class of 2026. She joined the teaching team at Urban Prairie after working in the Chicago Public Schools, both as a classroom teacher and a teacher coach and mentor with the Chicago New Teacher Center and the Erikson Early Math Collaborative. Between her time in CPS and UPWS, Liz assisted in an early childhood classroom at City Garden Waldorf School. Liz has a BA in Sociology from Augustana College and an MEd in Early Childhood Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She also earned her ESL/Multicultural Certificate at the Erikson Institute. Liz continues to pursue her Waldorf Teaching Certificate at Great Lakes Waldorf Institute in Milwaukee. Liz is eager to return to teaching in the grades.

Liz takes the place of current grade 1 teacher Ashley Bloczynsky, who has made the very difficult decision to return to her Wisconsin hometown following this school year. Ashley joined Urban Prairie late last summer, after Liz decided to step away from the school for pandemic-related reasons. Moving to a large urban environment in the middle of the pandemic, entering a new school, and launching a first grade made for a great challenge that Ashley mer head on with humor, pragmatism, and grace. We send her warmly back home, absolutely convinced that her path forward will lead her in a wonderful direction. And like we have with others before her who have made this hard decision to leave beloved students and families, we do not say goodbye, but rather, “see you in the future.”
