SCHOOL NEWS

Urban Prairie Alumni Reunion

Calling all Alumni! Join us Saturday, May 22, from 1-3:00 pm at Promontory Point Park at 55th and Lake Shore Drive for an Urban Prairie Reunion/Ice Cream Social. Hosted by Sharla Paul. Please register using this link, so we know how many treats to bring – https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0e48aba92ba5fa7-alumni.

Pentathlon

Pentathlon, traditionally held in late May, is an important capstone in the Waldorf fifth grade year at Urban Prairie and many other Waldorf schools in the U.S. Due to the pandemic and COVID related protocols, the Pentathlon will look different this year, but we are excited that we will be able to host an on-site, UPWS-only Pentathlon during school hours on Friday, May 28th. Families of former and future Pentathletes: Please join the faculty and staff in wishing this year’s fifth graders a wonderful experience!

Urban Prairie End of Year Concert Series

The end of year orchestra concert series this year will be a live-streamed event over Zoom : https://zoom.us/j/7855077229?pwd=Vnl1bHdhNWVHZmpETmhEdkhzajdYUT09  –  Meeting ID: 785 507 7229 – Passcode: 8sZ5S8

Our concert series will include pieces we have been working on as an orchestra as well as some solos and chamber groups. Concert date and times are as follows:  Grade 3,4  (June 1st, 10:55 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.); Grade 5 (June 1st, 12:50 – 1:30); Grade 6 (June 2nd, 12:50 – 1:30 p.m.); Grade 7,8 (June 3rd, 12:50 – 1:30 p.m.)  Join us on zoom, Enjoy some music and be sure to turn out to support the hard work of your student.

Instrument Rentals

You are encouraged to continue renting your student’s instrument over the summer. Continuing some music practice over the summer helps make the transition to the fall easier for the students. If you want to return your instrument, please either have your student drop it off in the Eurhythmy Room at the end of the year, or drop it off at William Harris Lee.

Summer Music Opportunities

For a fun summer music experience, Dan Galat and Kelly Quesada recommend checking out string music camps at Merit School of Music and Hyde Park Allegro Music Camp. Dan and Kelly are also offering private lessons in person and over Zoom at UPWS this summer. This can be a great way to build musical engagement during the summer. Please contact them if interested.

Spirit Week

We are bringing back Spirit Week! With so much going on the week of June 1, we are moving spirit week to the LAST week of school to allow students to focus on their music concerts and Jump-a-Thon jumping.

June 7: Color Team Monday (celebrate your team’s jumping by dressing in your color team color!)

June 8: Pajama Tuesday

June 9: Wacky Wednesday

June 10: Favorite Animal Thursday

June 11: Dress Your Best

Students may come to school dressed in theme. They should be able to move freely and participate in all activities. We ask that students not wear full face masks, just their regular mask.

Summer Camp – Don’t Miss Out

Summer camp is on the way to reaching 100% enrollment.  Currently, 85% of our slots are already taken and some weeks are full. Don’t find yourself on the waiting list. Follow this link for all the details:  https://www.urbanprairie.org/life-at-upws/camps/

COMMUNITY CONNECTION CORNER

5-4-3-2-1 Blast Off!

Jump-a-thon pledging has officially begun!  Some of the programs most near and dear to our hearts are directly boosted by family and friends’ support of Jump-a-Thon. Plus, it’s so easy to pledge.  Please share this link widely (UPWS Jump-a-thon Pledge 2021) to give those you love the opportunity to support your child as they give it their all to jump sky high the first week of June immediately after dismissal:

  • Tues 6/1 – 1st & 2nd grade Jump-a-Thon

  • Wed 6/2 – 3rd, 4th & 5th grade Jump-a-Thon

  • Fri 6/4 – 6th, 7th & 8th grade Jump-a-Thon

Last weekend we kicked things off and worked out the kinks of class jump rope making with the 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. Side bonus – Cookbook BINGO winners should be receiving their ropes soon! The 1st & 2nd graders will get together to make ropes this Sun 5/23 from 9-11 and then the middle school will wrap things up that same afternoon from 2-4.  Kids have a blast winding the ropes and the $15 cost gets charged to your TADS account.  Hope you can join us!

Back by Popular Demand – Cookbook

After seeing the gorgeous cookbooks, folks have asked for a second printing. Please fill out this form by Sun 5/23 to place an order. Cost is $15 and will be added to your TADS account. Preferred delivery method is to be sent home with students.  Questions?  Email us at c…@urbanprairie.org.

Yearbooks on Sale – IT’S NOT TOO LATE!

2019/2020 Yearbooks are ready for order.  Purchase by May 21st and receive free shipping to the school and an option to customize two pages. Yearbooks from the previous two years are also available to order. There will be a shipping cost for previous yearbooks. Here is the link to order.

CC Volunteers Needed for Next Year

A huge thank you to those who stepped up to be CC class delegates in this particularly challenging year. Next year we can use all the help we can get, not necessarily in the class delegate role either. We’re looking to change up the structure a little bit so it doesn’t fall so heavily on one person in each class. If you’d like to be part of a team that helps pull together an event or two of your own choice next year, please drop us a line at c…@urbanprairie.org. Thank you so much, we could really use your help!
