Classroom Highlights

The children and I were commenting this morning on what a funny week this was!  I hope you all were able to enjoy cozy, low-key days at home while escaping the intense cold outdoors.

Although our week was choppy, we did still have the opportunity to meet Margo Minus who is the town librarian of Numerica.  She is kind-hearted and loves to share books and even walks to nearby villages with her large blue bag to share these books with children.  We used our rekenreks to show how many Margo Minus left the library with and then calculated how many she had left after each stop on her journey.  The language we have used synonymously with minus is “give away”.  You can reinforce this at home in any story problems you create and solve together.

We continued to keep Perry Plus and Tamara Times’ work alive as well throughout the week.  We compared how they might figure out the solutions to problems.  The children are beginning to see that their goals are similar—they both want to figure out how many altogether.

During our Star Class on Tuesday, we were able to do painting review. Painting and its review continue to occur each week, with a focus on what we see the colors doing.  After the review on Tuesday, we also had time to play a familiar card game of War, but this time with a new spin—it was Perry Plus’ version.  The children turned over twocards and addedthem together to find out which child had the highest amount before determining who would take the cards.

Chinese New Year

Next Tuesday, February 5th, the children will be performing as pigs in the Chinese New Year Assembly. The assembly will begin at 2:00 p.m, and is open to the community.

Upcoming Events

Parent Night, Feb 6, 5:30-7pm

Thank you for taking the time to help me reschedule our evening together. We will come together at an earlier time than in the past, at 5:30pm.

I look forward to gathering for a night of sharing classroom experiences and discussion.  We will have the opportunity to learn trans-affirming tips, share the experiences we are having at home with our children, and experience some of the math learning from Grade 1.  Please let me know if you have questions.  I also would appreciate knowing if you are unable to attend.

First Grade Family Gathering, February 3, 10-11:30am

Join First Grade Families for our first monthly social gathering at Garfield Park Conservatory.  If you have questions, please reach out to our Room Parents, May Reilly and Lisa Gonzales.

Parent Teacher Conferences, March 14-15

Please mark your calendars for March 14-15 so we can come together and speak about your child.  When the days approach, we will share a Sign-Up Genius for our meetings.  Thank you.

Festival of Spectacles, April 6

We invite community members, parents, and children to come to a day packed full of student dramatic productions. The Festival of Spectacles will include performances from Grades 1-5. It’s a great opportunity to experience the full spectrum of the lower school theater curriculum. Be prepared to laugh, cry, and burst into explosive applause.  A final schedule will be shared soon, but be sure to save the date now!
