Board Study

Below is a link to a very short interview with Frank Wilson, author of The Hand.  This is the book that Aonghus Gordon referred to quite a bit when he visited and spoke to the Faculty and Board.

Perhaps this clip while brief will inspire others to bring ideas and resources related to the idea of a practical arts curriculum or hand-based learning!

Middle School Curriculum 101

Why do eighth graders study revolutions?  What is the middle school science curriculum?  Middle school will be here before you know it.  Join us for a discussion about the challenging and inspiring nature of the Waldorf middle school curriculum and how it meets the developmental needs of our students.  The session will be led by John Trevillion and Carol Triggiano, veteran teachers at the Chicago Waldorf School. Childcare will be available.  A donation of $5 to $10 is recommended and will be used toward supporting this and future Parent Education events.

Holiday Wreath Sales

Full, green, fragrant wreaths will be available for presale beginning at pick up on Monday, November 11th and concluding at the assembly on Friday, November 22nd, or use this link http://urbanprairie.org/holiday-wreaths/ .  The cost for one is $35 and the cost for two or more is $30 each. The wreaths can be purchased at either school, with checks made payable to Urban Prairie Waldorf School if purchased through UPWS. They will be available for pickup the week of December 2nd.  You will receive a confirmation email with pick up times and locations over the Thanksgiving break. This is one of our successful fundraisers, so please consider asking friends and neighbors if they would like to order one, too! Please contact Dona Nishi with any questions at parent.council@urbanprairie.org.

Warm Things Drive

Continue the celebration of Martinmas at home. Bring in gently used or new items of any size including coats, hats, scarves, mittens/gloves, boots, and blankets.  Items will be collected from the school beginning Monday, November 11th and concluding at the school assembly, Friday, November 22nd.

Holiday Fair

The tradition of the Holiday Fair in the City Garden and Urban Prairie communities is seven years young now, and is such a magical day for families. There are many activities to occupy the children – an ice sculptor, puppet shows and stories told by our faculty, crafts to make and take home, candles to dip, a fairy house for young children to visit, and of course, yummy food and drinks to sustain us all. The day culminates in lighting the Christmas tree and singing carols together. It is a beautiful way to begin the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.

New this year, the event is solely a community event, with only goods made by parents and students for sale, as well as books from Steiner Books (which you can order here), and Ro Hart, who makes the most exquisite gnome and elf sized wonders that the children just adore.

We hope you can join us these next few weeks at workshops at Urban Prairie or City Garden, or by making pretzels, cookies, muffins, quiche, or by donating beverages for the day. Sign up to donate or volunteer here. Please feel free to invite friends and family to the Holiday Fair.

We are still in need of shelf stable apple cider to serve warm, as well as port wine, vodka, and brandy to make a special Gløgg for adults only. You can drop these off with Ms. Lofgren at pick up or drop off beginning today through Friday, 11/22/13, 2pm at the assembly.

Crafting Workshops:

at Urban Prairie, 8:30am in the auditorium/cafeteria (downstairs)
  • Friday, November 15th – Sewing (crayon rolls) – cutters needed, not just sewers!
  • Monday, November 18th – Magic Wool Fairies
  • Thursday, December 5th – Finish up all the projects and price them

at City Garden, 920 W 19th Street, usually in Ms. Hellesoy’s class
  • Tuesday, November 12th, 7:30pm – Baking cookies and cake pops.
  • Thursday, November 14th, 7:30pm – Decorating the baked goods made the day before. More people are needed for decorating than baking!
  • Tuesday, November 19th, 7:30pm – Dry felting! Trees! And also crowns!
  • Sunday, November 24th, 2:00pm – Caroling. Come practice songs in preparation for the tree-lighting ceremony during the fair. All singing abilities needed (yes, even you who only sings in the shower!).
  • Tuesday, December 3rd, 7:30pm – Help us finish and price the items we’ve made.
  • Wednesday, December 4th, 7:30pm – Help us finish and price the items we’ve made.

Next week, Dona Nishi will send out some simple recipes you can make to donate to the cafes, as well as details on how and when you can drop them off.

The week before the Holiday Fair, we will send more specific information about the schedule for the fair, so you can plan your day and make sure you and your friends and family get the most out of it!

Please feel free to ask any questions – with our new role this year, we appreciate all the ideas and help we can take to make the event a pleasure for us all.

Thank you so much to all of our dedicated volunteers, bakers, setter uppers and cleaner uppers, as well as the faculty and administration, as we coordinate to create this magical day!

Become a morning drop off volunteer!

Please complete this doodle poll with your NOVEMBER availability. Remember, if each family donates one morning of their time from 7:45 – 8:15 am, everyone will have a great drop off experience throughout the month. Three parents are needed each morning.  MANY THANKS TO THOSE PARENTS WHO HAVE VOLUNTEERED SO FAR THIS SCHOOL YEAR!
