Dear Parents,

Another week has flown by in second grade. I have reports that many other classes have had lots of absences this week due to a flu that seems to be going around. We haven’t had many out, but the class has on the whole seemed very tired. Keep your second grader well rested this week. I will reinforce washing hands and drinking a lot of water at school.

UPCOMING EVENTS

  • Second Grade Parent Evening, Tues, January 31, 7:00-9:00 pm. Second grade assessments, overnight camping trip, screen time… this is NOT one to miss!
  • Class trip, May 10-12. Your child will be out of town these days!

CLASSROOM HIGHLIGHTS

Math: We progress through our math block, playing games relating to place value and also drilling our skip counting and times tables. Skip counting is the first step of learning their times/division tables. So far we have pretty solidly our 2s, 5s, 10s, and 11s, with our 3s and 6s not far behind. The 4s are proving to be a bit more allusive, but are coming along. This block we started skip counting by 9s and now also 7s. The 7s will be the hardest we’ve learned.

Painting: In painting class this week the second grade did their very first color wheel. We’ll return to this exercise many many times over the years. They start by creating separate circles of lemon yellow, carmine red, and prussian blue (the “parent” colors). Then they begin to bring them together, creating the secondary colors (the “kids”). In the review of this painting that will take place tomorrow, we’ll begin to use the words ‘primary and ‘secondary,’ adding to our art vocabulary.

Form drawing: This week in form drawing class we took off our shoes and socks and drew a very simple form with our feet. We did feet drawing several times last year, but it has been awhile. First we did the form in red with our right foot, and then we did the same one on top of the first only with blue and using our left foot. Lots of giggles and smiles and comments about how hard it was. We are feeling very appreciative of our hands.
